Anywho, I digress …

Loosely based on what might have happened. Or not.

A strange encounter at the airport

Posted by episode81 on August 8, 2009

I was traveling through SFO last year when something quite unexpected happened.  I am not talking about a friendly check-in agent or a free upgrade – those were the days.

Way back, I once got a free upgrade to Upper Class from Economy.  I realized as I went through the Boarding Gate that they thought I was a Virgin Atlantic employee.  I didn’t bother correcting them 😀

Anywho, I digress …

I was waiting in line at security and the guy behind me had a large wheeled case.  Nothing special about that, but it was somewhat unusual, which is probably why the security guy asked about it. My spidey sense was going off and I guess his was too …

Security Guy: <looking bored> “What’s in the case?”

Guy Behind Me: “A cipher machine”.

Me: <hoping it is what I think it is> ” What kind of cipher machine”

SG: <leans forward to hear the answer>

GBM: “It’s an Enigma

Me: <OMFG!> “Wow!  That’s awesome!  Can I see it? This is so exciting!  Can you open it?  Does it still work?  Wow!  That’s awesome!      <Vibrating with excitement>

GBM:  <looking slightly astonished, but pleased> “Sure”

SG:  <looking confused ….. me and GBM wander away ignoring him to look at The Enigma ….. he didn’t ask to see it>

An original, fully functional Enigma!  Keyboard, lights, rotors – everything in perfect working order.  What are the chances of bumping into a guy with an Enigma?  I should have bought a lottery ticket when I got home 😉
