Wordy knickers

Posted by episode81 on May 30, 2009

I came across this article the other day about words that people like and dislike.

I have maintained a list of words and names that I like for a few years. Yes, really.  I started it just to answer the question – if I could pick any name for myself, what would it be?

A couple of years ago, I met a lady who had changed her name to something that reminded me of a laxative.  Trying to suppress a giggle, I asked her why she chose that name.  She said she picked the name of a common, but distinctive roadside weed that grew in her neighborhood during her childhood.  I didn’t add it to my list 😉  The astute amongst you will know that I have not changed my name … yet.

Pick three

Posted by episode81 on May 17, 2009

I came across this website this morning while mindlessly surfing – is there any other kind?  The basic premise is that you pick three local businesses and plan on visiting them once a month to spend $50.  Sounds like a great idea to support the local economy. So I decided to give it a go.  First step, pick three local businesses.  Sounds easy.  Or so I thought.

When I am out and about, I like a non-fat latte … from Starbucks.  If I am traveling, I try and pick up a Starbucks mug as a memento of my trip. I like them because they hold about a pint of tea.  I like tea.  A lot.  I know, I know.  Why don’t I get tea when I am out then?

I don’t drink tea when I am out because I don’t like the tea on offer (enough said), but I need caffeine.  I don’t like sweet fizzy drinks, so I drink coffee.  I have quite a few mugs now.  You can get city, state and country mugs. Friends also pick them up for me on their travels, so I have a few from places I have never visited – New York, Beijing, Denver.

Maurice in Santa Monica

Posted by episode81 on May 12, 2009

MauriceSantaMonicaJust got back from Santa Monica.  Sun, sea, sand and salad.  The weather and shopping were fabulous!

I flew down on Virgin America for the first time.  Very nice.  Quite the contrast with United, American and the ghastly Southwest.  Cheap flights, but no lines and no rude check-in people.  In fact, they were very polite, friendly people.  A big difference is the departure terminal – SFO International instead of Domestic – which keeps the lines short and people happy.

The differences continue once aboard.  Nice new plane after a very orderly boarding.  Nice cabin crew with no stupid peanut races.  Honestly, I never ever want to fly Southwest again after enduring the peanut/pretzel/bag-o-bits in the aisle race twice on the same flight.

Intervention is the new black

Posted by episode81 on May 5, 2009

I watch a bit (!) of TV.  There isn’t a CSI that I don’t watch.  My dirty little secret is that my favourite one is CSI: Miami.  I love David Caruso and his sideways glance – especially when he snatches his glasses off.

I used to wear glasses.  I hated my glasses.  They steamed up in the sweaty UK summer and slid down my shiny (thanks Mum!) nose.  Oh, and I looked like a chicken wearing glasses in pictures. Now I just look like a chicken.

Anywho, I digress …
