It’ll be alright on the night

Funnier than you think

Every year or so, I start to laugh and …. well, it gets out of hand.  Some would call it hysteria.  I like to think of it as uncontrollable mirth.  That is not to say that I only laugh every year or so!  I laugh quite a bit 😀

I often scare people in the card shop when I come across a particularly funny card and start to titter.  Last year, I found a really good birthday card with a stork theme that cracked me up.  You know who you are 😉

That’ll be the day

Posted by episode81 on January 6, 2010

I had a subscription. Oh yes!

There is a new ad for the US Postal Service that makes me shiver.  It prominently features a clown – a creepy clown.  I don’t like clowns, creepy or otherwise.

A couple of years ago, I took my mum and my sister to Las Vegas for a bit of shopping, a show and a fabulous dinner at the Bellagio.  All was going well until the fabulous dinner at the Bellagio.  I picked the restaurant because there was a view of the fountains from the window and the food was French.  What I failed to notice was the theme of the restaurant – the circus.  There were clowns.  I ate my dinner with eyes downcast.  I couldn’t taste the food and I didn’t notice the fountains  😐

Cause and effect

Posted by episode81 on January 4, 2010

How much is too much?

I have always drunk a lot of tea – in a typical day, maybe 8 pints of black tea with fat-free milk.  Yes, 8 pints.  I really like tea.

Every year, at my annual physical, I get told to cut back.  I have never paid any attention to such an outrageous request!  I don’t like to drink water, never liked soda/fizzy drinks (Champagne excepted!) and will drink coffee when Typhoo is not available. Typhoo is expensive in the USA – if you can find it.  My Mum sends me large tea parcels several times a year to keep me going.  Thanks Mum!  I have always firmly believed that caffeine has no effect on me.  Oh, I get withdrawal headaches if I miss a cup here and there, but that’s about it … or so I thought.

I have been “at leisure” recently and, consequently, my tea consumption has dropped as I have no real routine.  Routines are good, but there is something (well, quite a lot actually) to be said for waking up without an alarm clock and planning the day on the fly.

For as long as I can remember, it has taken me 2 hours to fall asleep at night.  I never fall asleep in front of the TV.  I am not a morning person.  At times, I am not much of an afternoon person either.

That worked

Posted by episode81 on November 25, 2009

He appears about once every 20 years ...

There are times when I think – go on, fall off … skateboarders on the sidewalk.  Or, shoot me now … people telling me about their UK trip.  You get the picture.  Never usually happens,  good thing in the latter case!

Frequently while I am driving, I mutter “Where are the police when you need them?”.  The second most muttered phrase is “I hope your wheels fall off!”.  I got the last one courtesy of my mum.  Many years ago, she was running for a bus, the driver saw her, but drove off anyway.  The best insult she could come up with in that instant was “I hope your wheels fall off!”.  Inspired.  I have never forgotten the injustice perpetrated on my mum and have recently adopted the phrase whenever I pass the offices of a particular Bay Area company.  Nuff said.

At last!

Sinus pain makes you crazy

I get a lot of sinus headaches and sinus infections.  I used to take decongestants until I realized that they don’t work.  That only took 20 years!

Recently, I had to go to the ENT specialist to get a prescription for a sinus infection that just wouldn’t quit.  He suggested Mucinex – you have probably seen the ads …. ugly green guy that lives in your lungs making life miserable.  I was unconvinced as the pain was in my head not my lungs, but I was ready to try anything to kill the pain.

If you haven’t had a sinus infection (lucky you!) let me describe it for you.  Imagine the worst toothache you have ever had in your life.  Now imagine that in all the teeth on the LHS of your mouth.  Add being punched in the nose and regularly cracked over the head with a hammer, and there you have it.  Not good.

Business and coffee – not the perfect team

Posted by episode81 on November 18, 2009

Ah, Morning Bun. How I love you.

I walked into Palo Alto this afternoon to get a cup of coffee and a Morning Bun at Starbucks.  I like to sit and do my knitting.  I am often disappointed on the Morning Bun front – they stopped stocking them for a while and they have only recently returned.  I asked the store manager why and he said that they like to “Change it up to keep it fresh and sales moving”.  Perhaps they should call them “Afternoon Buns” after midday to encourage sales?

Never seen this before

Posted by episode81 on November 9, 2009

There is such a thing as a nice tangle, and this is it.

I visited a friend this morning to use her knitting equipment.  She has a swift and winder – used to convert a wool skein into a ball.  If you start knitting from a skein, it gets tangled and you spend more time untangling than knitting.  Not good.  It does beg the question, why sell tangly  skeins?  You need to wind it into a ball, preferably with a swift.  The alternative is to either put the skein on your feet (or a friend’s hands) and wind manually.  Also not good.

Uncommonly rude

Posted by episode81 on November 4, 2009

Not a picture of me ...

I love knitting, but not this much ...

I have lots of hobbies that I pick up and drop as the fancy takes me.  I have many boxes labeled “Lisa’s Forgotten Hobbies”, although I like to think of them as hibernating rather than forgotten.  In addition to gardening, I have rediscovered my love of knitting.  It is odd that my knitting stuff never made it into one of the aforementioned boxes – I wish it had.  I have “lost” my knitting bag that contains my most recent (started 6 years ago!) project.

I have been looking around for a new knitting project to get started.  In addition to the “lost” project, I have found 4 others that I could resurrect, but I like choosing the wool and starting a new project.  Notice a theme here?

Grease is the word

Nasty

I often get asked why I don’t have an iPhone.  The answer is quite simple.   It doesn’t go with my face.

My face is … well, there is no kind way to say it … it is kind of shiny.  The upside is that this means that my skin ages more slowly.  Well, whoop-de-do!  I will have great skin when I am 80 for the price of being shiny all my life.  Right now, that doesn’t feel like much of a deal.

My mum’s typical greeting when she hasn’t seen me for a while is a recommendation for face powder.  Obviously, that is right after we have cleared up the fact that I still do my hair “that” way.  Sweet lady.  Really 🙂

Foot note

Posted by episode81 on October 27, 2009

funnyfeet

Odd looking but curiously comfy

I like shoes.  Not as much as handbags, but I like them.  The last pair I bought are kind of odd, so I have been looking at people’s feet to see who else has them.  I was at the airport a couple of days ago, and so I continued my foot study there.

I was waiting at the gate  …. I was too early as usual, so I got to see everyone arrive.  They were all wearing boots or clumpy shoes and heavy coats.  I was on my way to New York in flip flops and a t-shirt. Under-dressed?  Much?  Ahem.  No odd shoes in sight.

Anywho, I digress …
