Phil

Santa Clara

I worked with Phil at Sun – even though we were on opposite coasts, our paths crossed frequently as we were both in the same group.  Nice guy.  We had a bit of a disagreement over a project and then our paths just crossed less often.

Quite a while later I ran into Phil in the corridor.  He stopped me to chat – I was just going to keep walking. We talked about that project.  We had a bit of a laugh.  We agreed to spend more time together, perhaps on his next trip, to see if there was a joint project we could collaborate on.

Phil’s next trip was on September 11th 2001.

I am so grateful that he made me stop and we had that chat.

Now I never delay resolving an issue.  I don’t even wait a day.

I went down to the old Sun campus today to take a moment to remember Phil.

Thank you for your friendship and sage guidance Phil.

Lisa.

RIP

Safe? Safer? Safest?

Posted by episode81 on August 4, 2011

Hang on a minute, lads. I've got a great idea!

I realized a few weeks ago that I needed somewhere to stash my important papers.  I used to have a fire safe.  In fact I had two, but now I don’t.

I started looking online for one – or two – but couldn’t decide. They come in all shapes, sizes and prices.  I really think it is a crap-shoot.  Who knows which one will survive intact, or not?

Einstein – even cooler than you thought

Posted by episode81 on July 30, 2011

Fancy

Every now and again I find myself searching online for a picture from way back.  No rhyme or reason to the searches, but I usually end up finding something completely different and way more interesting.  On occasion, I stumble into something most unfortunate.  Like the time I was looking for lemons and …

Pick me! Pick me!

Picked

Over the years, I have worked hard to create a filter (or at the very least, a delay loop) between my brain and my mouth.

Let’s be honest, I really don’t have one.  But I try.

Lucky surprise

Posted by episode81 on June 29, 2011

What do you see?

I got into a water cooler discussion about bugs yesterday.  There was general agreement that, typically, an encounter with a bug is not such a great thing.  They are great in the rain forest – leaf cutter ants, very cool – but not so much up close and personal – cockroaches in your bed, not cool.

Fast Five

Posted by episode81 on May 30, 2011

Bald and fabulous

I love Vin Diesel.

I love The Rock.

This movie has both of them.  It is an action movie.  They are not taking care of children.

Guess what? I love it!

No surprises there then.

The only slight negative?  The Rock’s unfortunate facial hair.  Nasty.

Stay through the early credits for the sequel set up. Stay until the bitter end for disappointment.

Henry Cooper – nice man

Posted by episode81 on May 1, 2011

Henry Cooper

Sad news today about Henry Cooper.  Yes, I know he is a Sir, but that just sounds odd.

Henry Cooper was born in Bellingham, SE London.  He grew up on the infamous council estate rather close to where I grew up.  Clearly, this is how and why he learned to fight!  In spite of the fighting, he has always been known as a very nice man.

An odd goose

Posted by episode81 on April 28, 2011

Quick! Run! No, fly! I see Grape Kool-Aid!

I have had the same email address for about 14 years or so.  Unsurprisingly, I occasionally get email from people who fat finger the email address trying to reach someone else and finding me instead.  How lucky of them.  Most of them are looking for Liz with whom I share the same last name.

I was pretty ticked off at first – someone looking for Liz added my name to one of those tedious joke of the day lists and I started getting bombarded with crap. I was pretty shirty with the offender until I realized their mistake. Now I just forward wayward messages directly to Liz and politely correct the erroneous sender.

There have been dog pictures, shopping recommendations, party invites and a rather splendid slideshow of the Kentucky Derby to name but a few.

Anywho, I digress …

Paul

Funny!

I finally got to see Paul.  Very British.  Very funny.

Paul is an alien.  He meets two British sci-fi geeks – Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.  Hilarity ensues.

Loved it!

A salty tale

Posted by episode81 on March 30, 2011

Big Shoes at The China Club, Hong Kong

Recently I took a business trip to Hong Kong.  Although I had almost no time to look around or shop, I did manage to get a jacket made in blue Thai silk (with an orange lining of course!), some fab ebony and silver chopsticks and dinner at The China Club (Thanks Chip!).

I was there right after the quake/tsunami/radiation crisis.  The news from Japan dominated the TV, newspaper and water cooler talk.  Everyday was worse than the last.  I confess that I stopped watching the news and never opened the free newspaper delivered to my room every morning.

Around the middle of the week, a rumor swept Hong Kong that the radiation leak in Japan would make the world’s salt supply permanently radioactive and that salt could offer some protection against radiation.  This caused long lines at all the stores and an exponential price increase.  People were even buying soy sauce so that they could get the salt from it.  Crazy.

Anywho, I digress …
