Anywho, I digress …

Loosely based on what might have happened. Or not.

Journalists are odd. But not in the way you might think …

Posted by episode81 on July 1, 2009

synchroswimmersOn Tuesday, I attended a presentation hosted by the Western Automotive Journalists.  It was all very interesting – both the presentation and the audience.  I have never spent any time with journalists and didn’t really know what to expect.  I was prepared to be appalled.  Fortunately, I was disappointed.  The people I spoke to were polite and insightful.  Nothing like the journalists we see on the TV, chasing inexplicably well-known people down the street with a large furry microphone.

Brainman

Posted by episode81 on June 27, 2009

I just watched Brainman on the Discovery Science Channel.  It is the story of Daniel Tammet, a savant from East London.

Immediately following that show was “Man-made Mammals” about (among other things) the artificial insemination of large mammals.  I can’t put into words what goes on in the first 10 minutes other than to say it involves a male elephant, two men with rubber gloves and a very, very large condom.  The female recipient of the largess was seriously short changed on the delivery mechanism in my opinion.

Anywho, I digress …

Oh no! Davros is coming!

Posted by episode81 on June 19, 2009

Am I alone in thinking of Davros every time I hear a news item about Iran?  Davros strives to be the Supreme Being.  Doctor Who strives to keep him at bay – it is always a last minute affair.  Don’t worry, we have nothing to fear 😉  Well, Hello Davros!

I have very fond (!) memories of hiding behind the sofa during episodes of Doctor Who.  The one with the huge green maggots was particularly scary … when I was 8.  I have seen those episodes recently. Good grief, how embarrassing!  What was I thinking?

Anywho, I digress …

Bowls not bowels

Posted by episode81 on June 7, 2009

I like looking at cool stuff, and somewhat surprisingly, they have that at TreeHugger.

I rather like the slide shows.  There is a great picture that I discovered that is beautiful and just plain fascinating.  Look at it (on the left) and try to figure it out.  I love it, but once you know what it is … it is a bit less striking.  So, if you want to know, click on the picture, if not don’t.  I wouldn’t.

Rhubarb Pie and Tall Sunflowers

Posted by episode81 on June 1, 2009

I thought it was time for a gardening update.  Oh yes, I have news 🙂  Probably not quite what you think, but news.

Let’s start with the rhubarb.

The first shoots came up really fast.  Woohoo!  Sadly, my rhubarb did not grow very tall.  It kept wilting in the sun, so my faithful Gardening Assistant, erected a very attractive rhubarb  shade from some wooden poles and an old bed-sheet.  It kept the rhubarb from getting sunstroke, but the stalks still wouldn’t grow tall.  The longest one is a little over 8″.  Kind of stumpy for rhubarb.rhubarbundershade-web

My dad grew rhubarb in the back garden when I was growing up.  You wouldn’t expect much success in London, but his rhubarb was perfect.  Three differences to consider:

  1. There isn’t as much sun in London as the SF Bay Area and there are hard frosts in the winter.  I don’t like that, but rhubarb does.
  2. Dad used some pieces of air-conditioning duct to surround the rhubarb and force it to grow tall.  I don’t have any.
  3. There was a rag-and-bone man that regularly came past the house in a horse drawn cart.  Dad would run out and collect any droppings with a bucket and shovel.  He would then parade through the house before depositing his street gold on the rhubarb.  Just in case you think I grew up in the Victorian era, this was the early 70’s!  It should come as no surprise that there is no rag-and-bone man here in Silicon Valley – horse drawn or otherwise.

The rag-and-bone man looked just the way you would expect – old, wizened and kind of shabby.  His call was “Any old bone?”.  My dad would rush out the door with his bucket and shovel and … well, nuff said 😉

Anywho, I digress …

Wordy knickers

Posted by episode81 on May 30, 2009

I came across this article the other day about words that people like and dislike.

I have maintained a list of words and names that I like for a few years. Yes, really.  I started it just to answer the question – if I could pick any name for myself, what would it be?

A couple of years ago, I met a lady who had changed her name to something that reminded me of a laxative.  Trying to suppress a giggle, I asked her why she chose that name.  She said she picked the name of a common, but distinctive roadside weed that grew in her neighborhood during her childhood.  I didn’t add it to my list 😉  The astute amongst you will know that I have not changed my name … yet.

Anywho, I digress …

Pick three

Posted by episode81 on May 17, 2009

I came across this website this morning while mindlessly surfing – is there any other kind?  The basic premise is that you pick three local businesses and plan on visiting them once a month to spend $50.  Sounds like a great idea to support the local economy. So I decided to give it a go.  First step, pick three local businesses.  Sounds easy.  Or so I thought.

When I am out and about, I like a non-fat latte … from Starbucks.  If I am traveling, I try and pick up a Starbucks mug as a memento of my trip. I like them because they hold about a pint of tea.  I like tea.  A lot.  I know, I know.  Why don’t I get tea when I am out then?

I don’t drink tea when I am out because I don’t like the tea on offer (enough said), but I need caffeine.  I don’t like sweet fizzy drinks, so I drink coffee.  I have quite a few mugs now.  You can get city, state and country mugs. Friends also pick them up for me on their travels, so I have a few from places I have never visited – New York, Beijing, Denver.

Anywho, I digress …

Maurice in Santa Monica

Posted by episode81 on May 12, 2009

MauriceSantaMonicaJust got back from Santa Monica.  Sun, sea, sand and salad.  The weather and shopping were fabulous!

I flew down on Virgin America for the first time.  Very nice.  Quite the contrast with United, American and the ghastly Southwest.  Cheap flights, but no lines and no rude check-in people.  In fact, they were very polite, friendly people.  A big difference is the departure terminal – SFO International instead of Domestic – which keeps the lines short and people happy.

The differences continue once aboard.  Nice new plane after a very orderly boarding.  Nice cabin crew with no stupid peanut races.  Honestly, I never ever want to fly Southwest again after enduring the peanut/pretzel/bag-o-bits in the aisle race twice on the same flight.

Anywho, I digress …

Intervention is the new black

I watch a bit (!) of TV.  There isn’t a CSI that I don’t watch.  My dirty little secret is that my favourite one is CSI: Miami.  I love David Caruso and his sideways glance – especially when he snatches his glasses off.

I used to wear glasses.  I hated my glasses.  They steamed up in the sweaty UK summer and slid down my shiny (thanks Mum!) nose.  Oh, and I looked like a chicken wearing glasses in pictures. Now I just look like a chicken.

Anywho, I digress …

Noodles 1.0

Posted by episode81 on April 27, 2009

noodles1

noodlesThis weekend, I spent some time at Save-a-Bunny in Mill Valley.  This is a remarkable charity that seeks out bunnies on death-row at shelters, and finds them homes with people who want one – like me.  The place is clean.  The only smell is of sweet hay – quite a feat if you are familiar with rabbits and their powerful output!

I visited on the way back from St Helena, where my friend Bob has a vineyard.  Bob worked with me at Sun.  He sold his stock before the crash (I didn’t) and now lives in St Helena, in a fabulous house surrounded by vines (I don’t).  Lucky man.  He makes the most awesome Cab I have ever tasted. There is nothing like a bottle of Bob with dinner.

Anywho, I digress …
