Man-saddle

This would have been useful!

I have a bicycle.  I got it years ago, paid for with an unexpected bonus.  I always thought it was a pretty good bike.  Silver, with reflective bits and decent lights.  I don’t have a bell, I have a squeezable tortoise.  After showing it to someone who knows bikes, I realize that my bike is not great and thus, my bonus was too small.  On the plus side, my lights are fabulous!

I started something!

Rar!

When I wrote Knitmare, I thought it would be popular 🙂  It got Boinged and my site traffic has never been the same.

If I had thought about it a little more, I would have put a watermark on the image to drive even more traffic my way.  I didn’t, so the image went viral without any link back to my site.  Poo.

Names are just labels. Or not.

Posted by episode81 on December 8, 2010

I have mentioned before my thoughts on selecting a new name for myself, but I got sidetracked by a list of words I like.  I have collected quite a few favorite words now.  Once you start thinking about it, they pop up all over the place.

Nasty

Blob

I like getting comments on my blog.  Apart from the page hits, it is proof that someone is actually reading my sweet prose.  I have become quite adept at spotting comments written by spam-bots, and they get zapped.  Most spam gets caught by Akismet, but the odd one does get through. I zap it.

What’s in a name?

Posted by episode81 on October 28, 2010

But can you see them?

My mum says that it is better to laugh with people than at people.  I agree.  But sometimes that just isn’t possible.  Consider this example.

Shortly after I arrived in the USA, a British friend of mine asked me to pick up her daughters from the airport, as she couldn’t make it, and bring them down to her place in San Jose.  I got to SFO early and stood at the front of arrivals with a big sign – I had no clue what they looked like.  They arrived, we piled into the car and set out for San Jose.

Friend’s Daughter: How long have you lived in the USA?

Me: Oh, about 9 months.  I like it.

FD: Why did you move here?

Me: Weather.  Money.  Opportunity.

FD: What are the biggest differences you have noticed?

Me: The roads are wider.  The lorries are very fancy.  People are less cynical.  They don’t drink at lunchtime.  <Smiling> Some have pretty funny names.  There are a lot of Dicks and Wallys over here.  <Huge Grin>

FD: <Not Smiling> Dickson-Wally.  Yes, that’s a strange surname.  Scottish?

I tried not to laugh.  Really. But you know how that goes.  The more you try, the more you laugh.  They were silent until we reached San Jose.  Me, not so much.  I was never invited over for dinner.

Clothing Mullet

Posted by episode81 on October 21, 2010

Avian Mullet

I am no fashion plate, but I do look in the mirror before I leave the house.  Usually to admire my handbag and to note how well it goes with my outfit.  I will be late for an appointment to avoid carrying a black bag, when a brown or orange one is required.  And I will only carry a bag with gold hardware if my jewelry is gold.  A little OCD but it does mean that I rotate my bags.  I do like my handbags.

Revisiting the Ashmolean Hippo

Posted by episode81 on October 15, 2010

Very nice

A little over a year ago, I wrote about my failed attempt to visit the Ashmolean Hippo.  After the crushing disappointment, I checked, rechecked and then checked again to make sure the Hippo would be available to greet his public during my visit.  I was assured that he was on display.

Rather than staying across the street from the Museum again, I decided to stay in a rather fabulous stately home, Eynsham Hall.  Wow!  Very nice!  The room had a great view over the grounds, and there was a double rainbow.  I just took a picture and didn’t, well, you know.  Go crazy.  But it was intense 🙂

Looking for Elvis?

Posted by episode81 on October 14, 2010

Thank you very much.

I do not consider myself an Elvis fan.  But that might be changing.

Just recently, Elvis has popped up in a number of unexpected places: as background music in a French restaurant and as a music request from Edison Pena, one of the trapped (now free, yey!) Chilean miners.

Let’s just take a moment to admire the name of Edison Pena.  I wonder if he has a brother called Tesla?

Politically Incorrect, but not in the way you might think

Posted by episode81 on October 7, 2010

Not PC. At all.

A friend forwarded a link to me recently.  I confess I have spent way too much time looking at the maps. I do like to look at maps, but usually skip the political maps as I find them dull.  These are not those.

I like to think that, as a European, my knowledge of European maps is good.  Sadly, it is not and Google Maps has helped fill in the gaps.

My knowledge of the map of the USA is similarly challenged.  Took me years to figure out that Arkansas and Ah-Kansas were the same state.  Bill Clinton helped me out there 😉

More than a test, not quite a donation

Posted by episode81 on October 1, 2010

Danger!

I am a sensitive flower.  A few months ago, while sitting in the back garden, my thigh inexplicably swelled up sending me hobbling off to the pharmacy for some Benadryl.  In fact, it was so spectacular – think chicken leg – that I now carry two epipens.  Apparently one is not enough.  These things are HUGE. HUGE.  So HUGE, that I often don’t carry them.  Yeah, that’s going to work.

Anywho, I digress …
