Funny Story

Odd

I enjoy a leisurely morning.  Cup of tea in bed.  Read a magazine.  Surf the web.  Bliss.

I think I particularly enjoy the sloth aspect because my mum spent years trying to get me to spring out of bed at the weekends.  I was a … grumpy child.  She finally gave up when she managed to rouse me at 11am one morning only for me to faint in the kitchen.  To this day I cannot just jump out of bed without a light head and a major wobble.  I need to take a moment.

Yey!  Justified sloth!

Unfortunate Architecture

Posted by episode81 on August 26, 2010

Hello world

The front of my house is C-shaped, with the concave side towards the street.  It is an attractive shape and not all that uncommon in this area.  Unfortunately, the master bedroom is at the front, on one end of the C.  Even on this really quiet street, it is noisy.  I get to hear drunken people stagger past in the middle of the night.  The dustman swings by at 6.30am, followed by the recycling truck.  Tumbling glass.  Yey!  😐  For some bizarre reason, the crack of dawn on Saturdays and Sundays are great times for uninvited visitors to snag a few lemons from the tree by the bedroom window.  Oh, how they chatter.

Please come home

I hate to lose stuff.  Until recently, I can’t recall the last time I lost something.  Maybe because I forgot I had it?  Who knows.

OK, 25 Juliet rolling

Thought

In February, there was a plane crash that took two of my friends.  We had many laughs and worked together daily until I left the company, where we met, in 2008.  I saw them a few times a year after that.  Good people.  Nice people.  Losing them was awful, but the aftermath was unexpected and truly shocking.

On the day of the crash, I was in shock, and I did what any other English person would do – I had a cup of tea.  Two cups later and I was no better.  I did what I do when I can’t settle, I went for a walk into downtown Palo Alto.

The crash took out the power in Palo Alto. It was lunchtime, so I went to one of the few places that was open, for a sandwich and coffee brewed on the gas stove.  People were talking about the power outage.  Well, they weren’t talking, they were complaining.  Mainly about the pilot and how it was madness to take off in fog.  I am sure that if they knew that I was there, at the very least they would have kept their voices down.  He was my friend.  He was a great pilot.  I have been a passenger in that plane.  Pilots take off in fog all the time.  It is unreasonable for me to expect people not to speculate but it didn’t make listening to it any easier.

I walked back home, past all the news crews posting stories about the disruption to business.  They were prattling on in a fact-vacuum.

Then it got worse.  The next day, I walked into town.  There he was on the front of every newspaper.  It really took my breath away.  It is shocking to see a friend’s picture on the front of the paper.  The speculation in the articles was deafening.  Anybody with an opinion, no matter how offensive and bone-headed, was given a platform.

Then the audio files were published – the last words of the pilot and the sound of the crash.

Yes, I read all the articles and listened to those audio files over and over, so I am part of the problem.  That’s not my point.

Here is my point.  The constant replaying of video clips, sound files and pictures associated with a tragedy, way after the event, have a tremendous impact on those connected to it.  Even those on the edges.  I don’t think most people realize that.  The constant rewind of the 9/11 videos, the shaky video at the BART station, the wild speculation in the absence of data – the family, friends and onlookers have to relive that terrible moment every time they see it.  For those not involved, it means nothing.  It is just a news story, illustrated with a familiar image – emotion without consequence.

Going forward, I avoid news articles that wallow in speculation and get overly melodramatic about tragedy.  I avoid TV programs that constantly rewind those tragic clips.  It is unnecessary and deeply disrespectful to all those connected with the tragedy du jour.

Think about it the next time you see that clip of the BART station or the collapse of the World Trade Center.  What about all the people touched by those events?  Think about how they feel every time they turn on the TV or open a paper.  Imagine watching a TV show months after a tragedy and suddenly there is a picture of your dead family/friend/colleague.  Don’t feed the frenzy.

That’s it.

Miss you Doug and Andy.  One great pilot, two great engineers, great people.

Miss you Phil.

Lisa.

PS   This post deliberately does not use the full names of my friends.  I don’t want the Google crowd in here.  I don’t want this post to show up in news alerts.  This isn’t news.

A tale of two Fridays

Posted by episode81 on August 15, 2010

Tooth-protecting is not attractive.

The last two Fridays have introduced me to two new experiences.  Both good.  Surprising as the first one was a root canal 😐

My tooth has been hurting for 2 years.  It started with a sensitivity to cold, so I avoided anything icy.  Lucky for me, I hate ice cream.  Yes, really.  If I couldn’t avoid cool liquids, I managed to twist my tongue around my tooth, while sucking in my cheek, to achieve the perfect seal.  Let’s just say that left me looking like I was sucking a lemon.  But only with the left side of my face.  Not a great look.

Knitmare got Boinged!

Posted by episode81 on August 9, 2010

Whoa! Just look at my traffic!

As soon as I saw the Knitmare picture, I thought of Boing Boing.  I thought that they would be interested enough to post it.  Oh boy, was I right!

I was hoping for a decent traffic spike.

On a typical day, I get less than 50 hits – my best day ever only resulted in 180 hits.  I don’t know what I was expecting, but what I got wasn’t it.  Knitmare got picked up by all sorts of unexpected blogs and forums – apparently, knitting unusual balaclavas appeals to people who cruise porn sites.  Who knew?

Ways to discourage unwelcome visitors

Posted by episode81 on August 2, 2010

Standby to be discouraged

I live in a nice neighborhood.  Subsequently, we get quite a few visitors at our door asking for money.  Some are very creative, others not so much.  None of them are successful and some even get arrested.  We are a tough crowd in Menlo Park.

Good grief!

Hello Ladies!

Recently I visited a Large Search Engine Company to take part in a User Experience study.  I am sworn to secrecy, so I can’t reveal the name.  I am sure you can guess 😉

I thought it would be interesting to see new features and to see how they administer the study.  And, hey!  They pay $75!  What’s not to love?

Lisa on Mars

Posted by episode81 on May 14, 2010

Where's Lisa?

Back in 2003, I took a business trip to JPL with some work colleagues.  We flew in a private plane and I felt like the Queen.  It was a Pilatus PC-12 NG.  Very fancy.  No checked bag fuss and as many carry-on items as I could manage.  I broke quite a few company travel rules – no private plane travel, no more than 2 VPs on the same plane (there were 4) and no fancy hotel rooms (I had a corner suite at the W).  It was all booked by my boss – an EVP.

The company is no longer in business.  Shocking.

Anywho, I digress …

Lisa does not have a big mouth – official

Posted by episode81 on May 12, 2010

Open wide!

I have been searching for a new dentist.  My old dentist, well, I wasn’t happy.  Nuff said.

I found my new dentist on Yelp.  Why?  I couldn’t find anyone who would recommend their dentist!  I was hoping that the comments on Yelp were genuine – much of what I have seen about local restaurants is too extreme to be useful.

“The meat was off and I ended up in hospital”  Vs  “The waiter kissed my shoes and gave me free champagne”

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Anywho, I digress …
